Large-scale reservoir expansion not best plan
As someone who lives near Soulajule reservoir, I am writing in response to the IJ editorial board’s piece published Nov. 21 with the headline, “MMWD reservoir expansion plan deserves a thoughtful look.” I was glad to read that others agree we need to take caution. I hope everyone is beginning to realize that large-scale reservoir expansion may not be the solution to creating a drought-resilient water supply.
I believe the high cost of these projects and the environmental harm they will cause should make them an unlikely choice to be useful options in the Marin Municipal Water District’s supply roadmap. I commend the directors for thoroughly exploring this option, and for clarifying why they may not work.
I hope directors will be able to pivot away from large-scale reservoir expansion, and instead dedicate MMWD’s considerable resources to build a drought resilient water supply that does not resort to such drastic measures.
